Community Action
“Inasmuch as you have done it to one of the least of my brothers, you have done it to me.“ Matthew 25:40
This familiar Bible verse is the foundation of much of the mission work done by members of Grace spearheaded by the Community Action Team.
What we do:
The Community Action Team coordinates a number of efforts to care for the Watauga community who are hungry, cold, without adequate shelter or are simply disadvantaged. Our budget supports WeCan (Watauga Crisis Area Network), Hospitality House, the Health and Hunger Coalition, and Watauga Habitat (as well as the pastor’s discretionary fund). Additionally we partner with other organizations in our community such as OASIS, the American Red Cross, Relay for Life, and the many Ministries at Grace.
In addition to financially supporting these agencies, we also provide food and other items for a variety of groups. The Community Action Team collects extra bakery items from the grocery stores and collects food and usable prescription bottles for use by the Health and Hunger Coalition. On the second Wednesday of each month, volunteers cook up a storm to feed 80 men, women and children through the Hospitality House Ministry partnership at Grace.
We support OASIS by providing monthly healthy snacks for a support group for the women in the program. Twice a year in February and August, we astound the American Red Cross by collecting around 30 pints of blood with member and walk-in donations.
In early December, our Holiday giving tree is placed in the fellowship hall decorated with ornaments highlighting needs of our community agencies as well as individuals needing a little support for alternative giving opportunities.
We also coordinate some fundraising activities such as working a parking lot fundraiser to support one of our the agencies who needs extra help and the Relay for Life Pinto Bean supper.
As part of the Serving Committees of Grace, several of our members partner with Grace Builders by working the woodlot and football Saturday parking lot fundraisers.
